- The highways are salted against to snow and ice.
- Features and use of salt
- Most of the salts include positively or negatively charged atoms or atomic groups which is namely ion.Positively charged ions come from metals and negatively charged ions come from acids.
Ions of a solid salt create all together a crystal. The form of the each crystals is differently.NaCl crystals are always cubes. Most of the salt crystals have water in the crystal structure.
When the salt is heated,an anhydrous form is obtained. An well known example:copper sulphate powder. It creates a blue liquor, when water is added.
Most of the salt dissolves in water and creates a liquor.
Some salts cannot dissolve in water.A salt, which composed of the result of a reaction between two solutions, sinking to the bottom decomposes and composes a solid substance. The salts can transmit electricity when they dissolve in water, because they are composed of ions. These solutions are called as electrolyte.Salt is included in many rocks. Some of these rocks such as limestone are composed of the calcium carbonate salt.
Very small amount of carbon dioxide in the air dissolves in water and creates dilute acid. The acid dissolves many of the rock salts. So lakes, river, especially seas and oceans include a great deal of salt liquor.Without salt animals and plants can’t live in nature.
Salt has an important use field in industry,in chemistry and in hauses.
SALTS İN CHEMİSTRY
Salt in chemistry occurs, when an acid and a base enter the reaction.Salt consists of positively charged ion in base and negatively charged ion in acid.Eventually water and salt crop up.They dissociate ions and transmit electricity.
Alkaline salts
Alkaline salts keep within an OH ion and when they dissolve in water, they make an alkaline athmosphere.Pb(OH)Cl, Sn(OH)Cl and Al(OH)Cl.There are simple, double and complex salts: NaCl,NaHe03 and Pb (OH)Cl…
Double salts
They occur from two simple salts. They dissociate their ions in water.Alums are double salts.Na Al(So4)2 and NH4Cr(So4)2 are double salts too.
Complex salts occur from two simple salts, which have the same acid root.K4Fe(Cn)6 are complex salts and they don’t dissociate their ions.
Salts are called firstly with the name of metal and then with the root of acid.Na2So4=Glauber’s salt, KCl=potassium chloride.
Some salts include intense acid, some include intense base. They make liquor acidic or alkaline.
